Is OU's engineering school much worse than a top-ranked engineering school?

I live in Oklahoma. I'm thinking about going to the University of Oklahoma to get a bachelor's degree in engineering and probably work in Oklahoma. I have the money to go out of state to a maybe-better school, but I think I want to save it.

How is OU's engineering school, and is it much worse than some of the top-ranked engineering schools?

In other words, should I spend the extra money going to an out of state college?

OU is a good school. There's another thread about this, but I don't think there is a lot of difference between OU and other, higher ranked institutions. In my opinion, most students would be better off with a chaper in-state school than an expensive out-of-state one. But there's a lot of factors that need to be considered.

Depends on what other engineering major you choose. If you go for petroleum or industrial, OU is quite good. For other traditional majors OU is pretty mediocre. I compare my workload with people I know who attend OU in my major and it's slightly ridiculous how much less they have to work for a better grade. I think I would have been a sophomore starting out if I had gone to OU.

Honestly, for engineering I would go with TU over OU, but the athletics alone are a big plus, right?:P

and there is your answer. Save your money and stay at home.

I too would say that unless you can get into a MUCH better school, like an MIT or Stanford, I'd probably just go to OU and pocket the money.

I live in Oklahoma too.
If youre looking at MechEng or Aerospace, I would say go to Oklahoma State. They rock at those, and its in-state.

There have been many topics like this on CC, and from my observation it looks like it doesn’t really matter as long as you graduate from an ABET-accredited school.

isn’t oky state the flagship engineering school in that state?

I visited the engineering department at OU. It was a very friendly atmosphere. Norman looked like a great college town. However, I’ve also heard good things about OkState engineering.
