Is Pratt comparable to the best?

Hi guys, I've read that Duke's engine programmes are very good. but how good are they? on par with the likes of stanford and MIT? or more like columbia's standards?

How do the industry and graduate schools view an engine degree from duke?

I think it depends on the program. For biomedical engineering, yes, Duke's the best. For other programs, Stanford and MIT would be better, but Duke's engineering is better than Columbia's. I don't like rankings, but to give you a general idea, Duke was ranked 20th overall in engineering (2nd in BME).

Other than BME Pratt isn't awesome for Engineering. The CS department is also amazing (but I'm not sure if thats included in Pratt)

Having said that, I'm heading for Duke this fall and will most probably major in ECE. I was choosing between CMU, Cornell and Duke in April. And I contacted some profs at Duke & Cornell . Most of them said the same thing, if you're strictly looking at an extreme level of technical education then go for CMU or Cornell. But if you're looking for a more personalised/broad education then Duke is awesome.

Also Duke has amazing oppotunities for research (Pratt fellows), so don't get the impression that Duke lacks the intensity. Its just that at Duke how deep you want to get into the subject depends on your interest and level of motivation.

IMO Schools better than Duke (strictly for Engineering): MIT, Stanford, UMich, Berekely, Caltech, UIUC, UT Austin, CMU, Cornell, Purdue & GaTech. (I might have missed one or two)

I think Duke's better than the rest :)

IMO with an Engineering degree from Duke you wont have any trouble finding a good job or getting into an awesome grad school. As a matter of fact quite a few Pratt students end up getting their masters at Stanford and other equally good grad schools. So dont worry about that.

monosierra,

One caution: Pratt is rather small and, if I am not mistaken, has only 4 disciplines. Make sure they have what you are interested in.

hello,

I think you missed Northwestern which has 4 undergrad programs (IE, MS, CE and ME) in the top 10. ;)

yeah, I forgot Northwestern and Princeton :)
monosierra : Northwestern was on my list too, but Duke's Financial Aid was just too hard to resist :D

i was thinking abt civil/structural engineering cuz i plan to study architecture in grad school. hopefully, i can take a arts minor.

so is pratt good (say, on the level of cornell?) for civil/structural engine?

nope, Cornell is definitely better for civil/structural engineering.

I would say that pratt is just a notch below.

except BME in which Duke is the best

i thought JHU was the best in BME?

yar. JHU has an edge in BME. so i guess duke's engine programmes are generally not amongst the best(MIT) or Cornell (like, say, Georgia Tech) but above Columbia (and Harvard!!)

i think JHU doesnt have an edge in BME
first of all, if you are saying JHU is the best because that's what u read on USNEWS, ..... .. . ;; i dont know what to say.

Is CalTech better than MIT?
Is Yale's undergraduate better than Harvard's?
Which university was at the number one spot on USNEWS 5 years ago and last year?

yeah..

p.s : Duke has the first BME program accreditted in the nation then the rest followed.
