I'm a first year BME at Georgia Tech and am on the premed track currently, and am wondering if I actually want to go to Med School. I'm in Gen Chem 2 currently and am doing well in the class, but I'm not sure what path I want to take yet. Originally, I wanted to end up in the research field of Medicine, but I'm not completely sure. I really like the engineering aspect of Medicine that BME has and I really want to stick with that as a major. At the same time, I don't mind the pre-med curriculum much, but the frightening thing is the amount of time I would have to devote to the MCAT and other Med School things only to end up in Med School 5 years later and realizing that it isn't something I want to do. I considered the possibility of MD/PhD programs but those are very time consuming, more difficult to get into, and most who go end up in the research field, which is something I can do through Grad School. I figured that if I make it a good way through the premed curriculum and decide I don't want to do either MD or MD/PhD that I could pursue a Biochem minor so that way, those extra classes from the Pre-med curriculum wouldn't go to waste. I just need advice on what I should do and am open to suggestions.

No one can tell if you are fit for medical profession except you. Use your instinct and judgement.

The only way to know if a career as a physician is right for you is to do some physician shadowing and clinical volunteering to get a first hand look at what it’s like to actually work in this field. Until you do that, you won’t know if going to med school is the right career path.

Invest a 100 hours of your time shadowing and volunteering and you’ll be more able to make an informed decision.

You’re only a frosh…why decide now… Don’t you have to take many of the premed prereqs anyway??
