Is PrepScholar worth it?

PrepScholar’s SAT Prep is really notorious for its “240+ Point Increase”, but is it really worth it?

It depends “worth” is very subjective. How much do you need to increase your score? Why do you need to the score you want? Have you exhausted all the free, low cost, local options? To some people $400 is a month’s rent to other’s it’s the cost of taking the family out to a nice dinner and a movie.

For us the motivation was financial. My D’s first choice school is a National Merit school. She was scoring close to our state’s historic cut but I would have have been devastated if she had been one of those kids that ‘missed by a point.’ She put in 20-30 hours on PrepScholar and assured a score that would make NMSF in any state. She hopes to take OU up on their five year, $124,000 scholarship. The bonus is that I haven’t spent the past 10 months worrying about her being ‘on the bubble.’ She also increased her SAT score to be competitive for some outside scholarships as well. So for us it was worth it.

Now I’m wondering how PrepScholar is going to change their guarantee to align with the new 1600 range.

I honestly think self-studying is the key to improve. Depending on where your score is you can should learn tips from CC, internet, and other books and then put them in use doing practice tests. But make sure you check every question right and wrong. That’s the key to real improvement. I suggest doing one question at a time and then reviewing the answer because i tend to forget the question and why i don’t understand it after a little while. However, if you don’t have motivation then PrepScholar will be very helpful.
