I know that back in the day SLC used to be considered a very good school and was even compared to the reputable Seven Sisters. However, that was back in the day when SLC used to be an all-girls school. Now, when I ask people what they think of SLC, they tell me it's like Vassar or Hampshire or they don't know that it even exists. Would going to SLC impress future employers or would it show that I just attended a typical LAC?

Hello Proudslacker1234,

I am a current sophomore at SLC, and I am more than happy to answer this question.

Although I would like to prefer to frame Sarah Lawrence in a more qualitative manner, we do rank quite high, with our professors being rated #1 in the US by the Princeton Review in 2013 (among other high rankings in various fields). Now, I believe that this numerical review has a strong correlation to the more qualitative characteristics of an education at SLC. Sarah Lawrence is known for it’s extremely intimate learning atmosphere, where the majority of courses are in a seminar format, capping at 15 students per class. Offering a deep variety of courses of study, you will be able to pursue a medley of studies through critical discussion and intensive writing. In addition, the most unique aspect of SLC pedagogy is our conference system. Through this system, you meet with your professors bi-weekly (and every week in a First Year Studies), where you will work on an independent project tangential to your course material. This project can range from a traditional 20 page research paper to an experimental video, as long as you are able to express your ideas in a critical manner. In this way, Sarah Lawrence prepares its students to be well-rounded, deep thinkers and doers. Sarah Lawrence has a very strong pedagogy that will not be found at other universities, and you will come away with a set of thoughts and skills that you choose to blend, guided and strengthened intimately by the deep, critical minds of your professors.

Still prestigious? When was it ever?
What is prestige? People who talk down universities are simply insecure. And almost certainly don’t go to prestigious universities themselves.
^ That’s for sure! My Ivy friends are so happy for me, and a lot of local state school students are all “what is that? Why would you want to go there”
