I think it's too early. Instead, start making a list. As either of you thinks of something, add it to the list. This way you both can feel like you are getting ready -- and you are -- just without jumping the gun. By the time it's ready to buy stuff, you will have a really comprehensive list that you've both had time to think about, rather than having to make a list at the last minute and risk leaving something out, or shopping too early and ending up with stuff you don't end up needing.

Sorry if this has been said before! Didn't read all the posts.

safety pins,(There was a sale at the craft store and I stocked up on those- two packs for a dollar- and with two girls- those things get used up fast) lint rollers, socks, flip flops for the shower

If I see "girl" stuff they use- bobby pins, pony tail holders, small stuff- on sale, I grab it and store it away

I have a freshman girl in college and a JR girl in HS- and I have start a box for her- nothing that requires a preference, but practical stuff that my oldest used alot

I do want to note that in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, it can get cold as early as the end of October, and definitely before Christmas (it's under 30 in Boston right now, and Boston is warmer than Amherst). Waiting until Thanksgiving even to get warm blankets and clothing might make a Georgia peach freeze! Now, getting warm clothes after this Christmas is, I think, a wise idea.

If you don't have enough of a choice of warm stuff in Georgia, consider LLBean's and Land's End catalogues. They tend to the be "outdoor clothes of choice" around here.

Think ahead to situations that may change after freshman year. My DD moved off campus after 1 year and bought a full sized bed, so all the twin XL sheets were given away. The bookshelves and lamps are always useful. Also, all 3 room mates came with minifridges, which all ended up in the basement. If finances are tight, save some money for future needs. Even on campus, housing needs can change. Take her on a shopping trip for clothes and personal items to celebrate. Some basic office supplies are useful too, like a desk set, stapler, extension cords, etc. Congratulations, enjoy your time with her.
