Is SJSU really that unsafe?

Looking to attend in the fall and is it really that unsafe and dangerous at night? Campus and downtown both.

I can’t say for the campus, but I live in the area and at night it can be scary. SJSU is located downtown of a large city which means it comes with a homeless population and there are some stories of muggings. Sometimes it can be scary but there are many many spots where people regularly go out for munchies (La Vic’s, Spartan Tacos, iguanas, etc.) so it’s not completely unsafe to go out after dark. Just make sure you don’t go out alone and I’m sure you’ll be fine. if you’re a girl, invest in pepper spray and try not to go out alone and you should be okay.
I will say that in the day though, it’s pretty great. TONS AND TONS AND TONS OF GREAT FOOD PLACES. That’s one of the biggest things that i love about san jose. If you like mexican food you won’t be disappointed

It’s just homeless people and bums. Once you venture out of downtown, SJ Is a really safe city. The campus itself is really safe other than the aforementioned people going through campus, even at night.
