Are there exclusive ivy league events that stanford is left out of? Especially if I want to go into finance/consulting?
You do realize that the Ivy League is an athletic conference, right? If there were “exclusive events” that did not understand that, I’m not sure that that is an event that is worth attending.
If you think you might want Stanford, why not learn what it’s about? Do the leg work, check what they offer, what they value and look for in applicants. That exploration will bring you a lot closer to understanding than a random forum question.
Stanford is left out of dating pool definitely. They have no sister school affiliations.
Stanford might not be an “Ivy” but for all intensive purposes it is treated as one. For example in Ivy League alumni social events in in New York most of the time MIT +Standord are included. nowadays Stanford is considered as desirable, prestigious as Harvard, the top Ivy. Also it’s academic, research quality and global name recognition is undeniable. There is nothing it lacks relative to the ivies.
As noted the Ivy League is an athletic conference, albeit one with a lot more controls on the academic profile of athletic recruits than other conferences. And many of the alumni events that are cross-Ivy rather than for one particular school, will include Stanford and other elite non-Ivy schools also. But those are often museum tours, happy hours and other social type events in any case.
The one group of Ivy students where things can be a bit different is varsity athletes that travel to all the schools in the league and to some extent can get to know their peers at the other Ivies . . . that’s only 10-15% of all students though.
Virtually every single student at a non-HYP Ivy would give an arm and a leg to be at Stanford. Don’t buy into the hype. The Ivy League is an athletic conference which happens to include schools like Harvard and Princeton. Rutgers could have been an Ivy (google it). It’s about geography more than anything else.
Schools like Stanford, Duke, MIT and Chicago are considered to be “Ivy” caliber and their alums often attend Ivy League networking events. Here is a quote from wikipedia:
The term “Ivy Plus” is sometimes used to refer to the Ancient Eight plus several other schools for purposes of alumni associations, university affiliations, or endowment comparisons. In his book Untangling the Ivy League, Zawel writes, “The inclusion of non-Ivy League schools under this term is commonplace for some schools and extremely rare for others. Among these other schools, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University are almost always included. The University of Chicago and Duke University are often included as well.”
Sorry to be the grammar police but “all intents and purposes” post #5
Signed, Mom
The way things are going I think the Ivies might be concerned they will left out of the Stanford circle.
@NerdyChica Nowadays most Yale, Princeton and many Harvard people would choose Stanford too.
@doschicos thanks for the correction ;). Getting carried away and using the idiomatic expression too often
Ivy’s are so 90’s. This is the 21st century, lol, tech is where it’s at!
