I am transferring to either UAlbany or Stony Brook next semester but would like to know which is better for job prospects and salary after graduation w/ BA in computer science. I live close to UAlbany and would not have to pay for housing, but for Stony Brook I would have to pay for housing and have heard their CS program is really good. I would have to take loans for SBU to attend but UAlbany I wouldnt have to spend nearly as much. I haven’t heard much about the CS department in UAlbany and don’t know how well CS grads there do. I feel as though I may miss out on opportunities if I don’t attend SBU. Any input is appreciated.
I work in the field, meaning I have a CS degree, and hire graduates. Was not even aware UA has a program. I assume most large unis have CS, but none of my colleagues studied CS there, and frankly I would not recruit from UA. SB yes does have a better rep, much better. The only argument here, is if you can afford to go to SB or not, but they are not comparable academically. Sorry, realize this was not what you hoped to hear.
One could consider UA, if you plan on grad school (save money in undergrad). You better get As and do well on GRE test later…
But if you are thinking just undergrad, go to SB.
@blevine hey sorry to bring up this old post, i have a question if you don’t mind. why wouldn’t you hire from UA?
@bringmehome I kinda answered that above.
So here is my take on this…
College is what YOU make of it! It’s true that SBU has a much better reputation in CS than UAlbany, but if cost is a factor, then you have to make the best financial decision.
Take advantage of internships. Join clubs; hold e-board positions. Connect with your professors and ask them what you should do to stand out. BE PROACTIVE!
I went to UAlbany for accounting… If you were comparing UAlb to the University of Illinois, then people would say go to UI because of their higher ranking. BUT that DOES NOT MEAN that you will not find success in life by going to the lower ranked school!
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT UALBANY HAS TO OFFER!
There are so many clubs and orgs and career fairs, etc. that will help build your resume. If you want to, go to a better university for grad school. My friend is at the University of Maryland (ranked higher than SBU for CS) in their MS in CS program. Guess where he got his BS? UAlb.
Do not take UAlbany lightly
