Is tactical training given in school?

I know optional classes are offered at other academys for tactical training in school, but is this the case for the naval academy? Is training given just over the summer or while in school as well?

Yeah… maybe? I have no idea… but I wouldn’t bet on it being something of utmost importance at USNA… since not every to-be officer is going to be on the front lines. There are specialized schools after the Academy, in the fleet, such as the Officer version of Field Medical Training School which prepares Medical Corps and Nurse Corps officers for Marine (Green) side service. And then there are the Marine Corps officers that upon graduation will to to TBS and learn how to be a Marine.

Over the summer you can do Jump School or Air Assault School or Dive School if you do well enough on the screeners. This year, the Academy stopped funding these trips so nobody is sure whether anyone is going.

It depends on what opportunies you seek out. The Semper Fi Society does offer some training opportunities, but at very limited level.

The practicum classes for Marine Corps and SEAL selectees offer a good bit of tactical training, but one thing you should realize is that West Point has to do a different style of training than we do. For their infantry officers, they dont have a very long training schedule (roughly 3 months) before they are with their unit, so while at West Point, they have to provide a much richer base of “tactical training”. For us though, the Marines all go to TBS for 6 months, then to their MOS training, so they will receive a MUCH longer and more in depth level of training on graduation. With the SEAL selectees, aside from BUDS, they have jump training, JOTC, SQT, and another 18 months of non-deployable status before they are out there (thats over 3 years), so they receive WAY more training than anyone else. So because of the much longer and thicker amounts of training the Marine/ SEAL guys get on graduation, the academy doesnt feel it necessary to spend as much time here developing that aspect.

Do I agree with that mindset, no. Is it the way it is, yes.

So you will receive training through SMT, Semper Fi, summer training, etc. Lots of it too. But it is different than West Point.

In regards to air force… seriously? They dont even do anything so I dont feel it necessary to write anything.

HAHA… The Desk-Flying ChairForce students get to hone their pencil pushing skills… We ALL know that’s critical to surviving in a war zone. :)
