Is the conservatory the only route?

Is it 100% necessary for a student to be in the conservatory to participate in music groups on-campus? I want to be apart of Oberlin's music scene, but I didn't apply to the conservatory. I know I can always go see a concert (which I DEFINETLY will) but I would also like to play in an ensemble. (Not necessarily a conservatory ensemble) Is this possible?

-nae nae

There is a music major in the college, and many music groups outside of the conservatory.Apparently there is the ability to apply for the conservatory after starting in the college as well. Also if you're a junior, have you considered applying for the double degree program? It's where you apply to both the college and the conservatory and get a BA and BM in 5 years (less with ap credits) That's what I did, we'll see how well the application process goes.

You can participate in the music scene without being in the con, although you may not have as much oppourtunity as you will not be as prepared as most of the con kids. They are all music, which im sure rhapsody knows quite well. When I visited I saw it up close and personal. It was 9:00 AM (!) and I was walking across campus for my interview/tour (mind you it was -5 degrees) and I swear there were about 30 kids with basses racing towards the con, followed by violinists and flutists. The kids in the con are all music all the time and if you aren't as hard core you may not have the situation you hoped for.

Good Question nae

Although I am not a musician myself, many of my non-conservatory friends are and have plenty of opportunities to play on campus. Many groups are open to both college and conservatory students. There are also many bands not sponsored by the college that have students from both.

Additionally, college students are able (if not encouraged) to take "secondary" lessons. Basically, these are private lessons with experienced conservatory students or professors taken for credit. Students have to apply, but I don't believe it's that big of a roadblock.

Basically, there is more music here than anyone could ever be involved in, and there's always room for more musicians. It's one of the things I love about this place.

we'll have to apply? hm...im afraid my horrid playing will lead me nowhere...:( anyway knowing all these is great! :D oberlin's definitely the right choice ^^

Do you guys know when the Conservatory will be sending out acceptance letters? Two of my friends already know that they got in, but that's because they auditioned at Oberlin. I did a regional audition.

no idea. My audition's on friday...nervous. I haven't practiced as much as I should with all the other musical stuff I've had going on. Hope it goes ok...
