I was accepted to Oberlin class of 2014 (Arts & Sciences) and am currently trying to decide between Oberlin and a couple other liberal arts colleges. The thing is, I am very interested in music and have always been involved with bands in high school, but I just want to continue music as a hobby in college. Would a student like me appreciate Oberlin's strong music scene? Are there many College of Arts and Sciences students who participate in musical activities or use the Conservatory's facilities? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Yes, many, many, MANY College students participate in musical activities and spend time in the Conservatory. There are many bands on campus that are made up completely or partially of College students.

Oberlin is a uniquely musical liberal arts college, with really no peer in the category (maybe Lawrence) because of the presence of the Conservatory. There are so many resources (including practice rooms and performance venues, and unbelievably inexpensive lessons right on campus) in and outside of the Conservatory, and so many other students who are interested in all kinds of music performance (classical, jazz, folk, etc., etc.), that you will readily find opportunities to pursue your music.

As a college student involved with music myself…
Yes, you will definitely appreciate all the music around you! You can take in all the great concerts (there seems to always be some sort of concert going on, from student recitals to ensembles to professional guests). You’re also free to use all the con resources, like the practice rooms and library as mentioned above (sorry to be repetitive). You can also take some classes if you want to, though you’d have to get on the wait list since they wouldn’t be requirements.
However, you will be pretty much limited to playing with college students. For winds, that basically means College Community Winds or the recently-founded college student orchestra. There’s not a lot of mixing with conservatory students in ensembles, and in some ways there’s a separation between the opportunities for the two, but you just have to be persistent.
I’ve been pretty serious about music, but you can really do as much as you want. And there are so many other musical Oberlin students around that you can usually find someone else to play with just for fun!
