i think that SLO should be a UC because (my opinion) it is as good/even better than schools like UCI, UCSB, UCD, and maybe UCSD in the engineering field.

"i think that SLO should be a UC because (my opinion) it is as good/even better than schools like UCI, UCSB, UCD, and maybe UCSD in the engineering field."

What is your reasoning?

At my kid's school, it is harder to get into SDSU than Oregon and Arizona. I guess one of the things that Arizona and Oregon have over SDSU is PAC 10 sports.

yes, and the aztecs would die to join that league.
the mountain west is not a good fit, particularly for baseball.

"i think that SLO should be a UC because (my opinion) it is as good/even better than schools like UCI, UCSB, UCD, and maybe UCSD in the engineering field."

i respect your opinion, but i have to note that SLO is NOT a research university and therefore its mission is not the same as the UC.

here is an interesting add on to the tiering of the CSU system. a number of the system's presidents have boasted they either they are the "flagship" of the system or they are quickly becoming the best in the system. now there might be some credibility to the statement coming from san diego state (though president warren baker at SLO surely could take issue with that) but from sac state? and most recently, from the prez at gasp...bakersfield?

guess he was so thrilled about a student referendum moving the school toward DI athletics that he thought this was the fast track over the elites of the system.

most accounts rank sac and bakersfield in the bottom third. so much for hype.

Keep SLO as a CSU, in my opinion - there's no need to make a sudden change to their tradition of career-focused training. Leave the heavy research to the UCs and any other privates that want to follow suit.

For location, San Diego State has the clear advantage.

We don't have pac-10 sports unfortunately. Although SDSU's basketball team will be a tournament contender next year, we're getting outstandish recruits.

Also the football team in recent years has been improving, we have the ability to beat any team anywhere in the united states at any given time.

So we may not be Pac 10, but things are looking rather up for our sports programs. Not too mention our baseball team led by Tony Gywnn is very good.

On a sidenote: How about them Padres?

It would be a VERY expensive undertaking to establish and fund all those research and Ph.D. programs. They found this out the hard way in the past. UC Santa Barbara started out as a Cal State and converted over to be a UC. They spent billions and it took decades before it caught up with the other UCs academically.
