Is the Essay Graded More Harshly Now Than Before?

The reason I ask is that I just looked at my son's detailed scores. I was a bit surprised he had only gotten an 8 on his essay because he is a pretty good writer. I read it and found one glaring error (he left out a word in a sentence). I could find no grammatical errors and ran it by a few "writers" at the office who also agreed. I do think he could have found one more good example. As it was he had three examples.

So, I then pulled up my daughter's SAT scores from 2008/2009. She had horrible scores anyway, but her essay was an 8. I pulled that up, printed it out. It was atrocious. But, yet, an 8. I found so many errors on it that I could have bled red ink all over the page.

So, what is up with that or just not my son's lucky day? Do you know if there will be examples posted of a 12 essay for the May 2012 prompt?

I just think like you.I am an international studend and i did not know what was sat when i first took and got 6.I have prepared for months, improved my essay, made templates
And got 7.I havent still figured out why.

Interesting, I took the May 5th SAT and I honestly didn’t think my essay was good at all. Maybe an 8 as well but I got a 10! I was surprised! I only used 2 examples and I didn’t even get to finish. (I had like 3 words left to write). So I think they were lenient towards my essay.

intro, 3 stupid paragraphs that relate to thesis, conclusion, fill both pages. easy 10

I thought my essay on the May 5th test was pretty terrible, but I somehow got an 8. I think 8 is the magic number because most of my friends got 8’s and our writing skills vary quite a bit.
