Is the Honors Program worth it?

Just a few questions about the Honors Program…

Can you test out of some of the core requirements? (i.e. 5 on AP English allows me to not take Writing and Literature)

I would really rather not take these classes if I dont have to…it seems like a lot of Honors people would have already tested out of some stuff

no one????

bump...I wanna know too!

I signed up for it...

fyi we went through this last year with my freshman D who is in the honors program. The way I understand it is that the honors seminar focuses on writing, literature, philosophy, etc. So I think that testing out of the core in these areas may be a challenge if you plan on taking the honors seminar (actually this may be different depending on whether you are in CSOM, Lynch, or A&S). The best thing to do is to call or email the chairman of the Honors program and get the official position on AP waivers as it may change from year to year. D definitely did get core waived in other areas based on AP scores, eg. foreign language, history, etc.

There are separate honors programs in A&S, Carroll, Lynch and Connell. I think a 5 on AP English places you out of the Writing and Lit cores for all of these. I'd ask the program directly (go to: http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/honors/contact)

General thoughts on the honors program: YES its worth it. Small seminars, great professors, and best of all a strong intellectual community. Not that you cant find any of these outside of honors, but with honors its guaranteed. I hate large lecture classes and have had to take two (one was with an awsome prof though so it worked out great, the other was just ok) so I think honors would have been great for me. I decided against it because I wanted to do the PULSE program and felt it would be a lot to balance. I don't regret PULSE at all (another program I highly recommend), but think maybe I could have pulled both off in retrospect. Water under the bridge I guess ...
