It seems as if at least 50% of all UT Austin applicants apply to McCombs. Most of my high school friends who are applying to UT are applying to McCombs as well. I, on the other hand, got accepted into the College of Natural Sciences. Do you think this will kind of put me out of the loop once I get to college since most people I know are applying to McCombs? I applied to CNS because my first interest was pre-pharmacy/biochemistry, but business (accounting) has always been a close second. Can I make the switch to McCombs in my 2nd yr at UT if I feel like pre-pharm is not for me?

CNS has roughly 9,000 undergraduates. McCombs has 6,000 students, which includes both undergraduate AND graduate students. You do the math and tell me, which is “more popular”? I suspect that your perception is being distorted just because of the particular crowd that you now hang around with. They seem to be very business-oriented, if such a high proportion of them are applying to McCombs.

I hope that when you get to college, you will branch out beyond your current friends from high school and will use the opportunity to make many new friends. You can still see your old friends, of course, even if you are not in classes with them. But please do not choose a major based on what your friends are doing. It’s your life!
