I keep seeing rating for bad social life. Is it really that bad?

i never heard that. there are great social lives at LAC's especially at schools like Washington and Lee where the social life is absolutely crazy and always fun.

It depends what you mean by "social life"?

When you look at college surveys "social life" usually means:

a) tons of drinking

b) big frat scene

c) lots of clubs and bars around campus

By that definition, many of the small LACs do not have the "social life" of a big "party school".

It is useful when asking for opinions of school to define what you mean by "good social life" because some of these buzz words can have very different meanings to different people. For example, some students would think "good social life" means a campus where there is a large percentage of students enjoying weekend activities that do not revolve around getting plastered.

Never heard that. My s is at Pomona and they are supposedly the happiest students. At any rate he seems very happy with his social life. I have heard the same from his friends at schools such as Wesleyan, McAllister.

Katie could think that a good social life is directly proportional to the amount of drinking/fratboys/parties with fratboys. Jennifer could think that a good social life is finding a small, close knit community (often found at LACs) that doesn't necessarily embrace a huge drinking/partying scene.

It depends on the individual as to whether LACs or unis have "good social scenes." Some people like staying home and renting a movie with friends, others can't bear staying home and would much rather go out and party. If you're more of the later, than maybe most LACs wouldn't quite be fitting for you.

But there shouldn't be any absolutes made in reference to whether a school has a good social scene. The type of social scene that is considered favorable is more of a personal preference than a generalization. Many people will heartily disagree with the statement "Social Life is bad at LACs."

Someone mentioned Pomona on this thread. When I was visiting the Claremont Colleges, it was mentioned that Pomona had a lot of fun parties (including the bathroom party), and Claremont-McKenna kids are big on drinking. Both Pomona and Claremont are quite small LACs.

OK-dare I ask what the bathroom party is or do I even want to know?

Bathroom party: big party in which everyone who arrives is to be dressed in either pajamas/sleeping clothes (which for girls, as you know, is often just little tees, or shorts, or tanktops), bathrobes or other less "constricting" clothes, or sometimes barely anything at all.

When you're drinking and you're barely wearing clothes with a large group of people doing likewise and wearing likewise, like any other party, it can disintegrate into something different all together. And I'm sure everyone can guess what that "something different" can be.

i've never, ever heard that.

Only if you think it takes 25,000 to throw a good party. Are you kidding? People at small LAC get to know classmates. If you don't enjoy intimacy and want to meet all new pwople every week, you will be happier at a huge university.
