Is the total cost really 51k?

Idk if I’m looking at this wrong but 51k for a public school seems like way too much. I received the 15k scholarship but the school is still so expensive. I thought it was like 45 last year. Correct me if I’m wrong!

I was on the phone with someone in my daughter’s department, Animal Science over about 1 month ago. 2014-2015 prices were still on the website. She informed me that there would be an increase of about 5% in tuition. The following is on UConn’s website…

2014-2015
Out-of-State
Tuition $30,038
University & Student Fees $2,902
Residence Hall (average) $6,466
University Meals (7-day program) $5,608
Estimated Yearly Expenses* $45,014

2015-2016
Out-of-State

Tuition 31,608

University and Student Fees 2,882

On/Off-Campus Housing Estimate* 7,513
On/Off-Campus Meal Plan Estimate* 5,512
Subtotal Direct Costs 47,516

When they quote numbers like $51,000 they are including costs for books, travel cost associated with getting home for breaks, hotel stays etc…

There is also a Regional rate for tuition, it applies to certain majors if you reside in certain New England states from what I understand. We live in NJ, so we are Out-of-State.
