Is the transfer process easy? And what does CPSLO look for?

Hey guys, I’ve been reading this website for the past few months to see what was up with the college transfer waitlist. I was on it for a long time and finally got rejected a few days before July 16th. My planned major was Environmental Engineering, my college GPA is currently 3.51, and I finished all the English, Speech, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Statics, and most of my GE. I worked 15 hours a week as well and did 1-5 hours of being in a club. Unfortunately, I was cocky last Fall and only applied to this school, and well look what happened, I have to stay in Community College for another year! I plan on applying to Cal Poly SLO again as my first choice, but now I have some questions:

IF I get accepted, will it take me longer to graduate since many of the engineering major classes are only at the university? Will I be at a disadvantage?

Is it reccomended to fully complete my GE requirements?

What else do they look for? Should I also try to complete the other support courses that are not required for transfer but if accepted will count as subject credit?

By the end of Spring 2011 I will definitely have about 90 units under my belt. My main choice is Cal Poly SLO but this time I will also have a plethora of backup schools (I will consider dropping school if I dont get accepted to anywhere next year) . I am asking you guys these questions because Santa Monica College’s counselors are absolutely clueless about the engineering transfer process, and the Cal Poly representative I’ve been emailing isn’t directly answering my questions.

I think what the admission officers are looking for on the application is somewhat vague. GPA is definitely is one of the major deciding factor, but my overall GPA is no where near the average GPA for my major, which is electrical engineering. I have also completed every single course outlined on assist.org plus more, and completed IGETC certification for both UC and CSU including the speech class and foreign language requirements. My main choice is also Cal Poly, and I finally got in this year after applying for four times and going to a UC for a year (for shame, I know).

Please do not think of dropping out of school! I am sure you may get in to Cal Poly on your next try and or most of the UCs with your GPA. You are guaranteed admission to most of the UC with at a 3.1 GPA anyway!

IF I get accepted, will it take me longer to graduate since many of the engineering major classes are only at the university? Will I be at a disadvantage?

If you do get accepted, you will be meeting with your major advisor to plan out an academic plan on what to take for the subsequent quarters. Every engineering major has a course flowchart/curriculum sheet that tells you exactly what you need to take on what quarter to graduate on time.

**Is it recommended to fully complete my GE requirements? **

I think completing it will give you a slight edge on getting in, again, that’s my personal opinion. After reading the wait-list thread, most of the transfer students who got rejected did not finish the GE requirements. Besides, you will have to complete them after you transfer anyway so may as well complete them at a community college for cheaper and possibly easier courses.

What else do they look for? Should I also try to complete the other support courses that are not required for transfer but if accepted will count as subject credit?

I say complete as much as you can or take more if you can… I took courses from every single category below plus more. (note, the following course list is copied from the submitted application printout on csumentor.edu).

Good Luck, and again, please do not think of dropping out from school!

Thanks for the informative post, it’s the most help I’ve gotten in a while.

No problem at all, glad to help. I have left out the course pattern that I have taken for the categories mentioned on the first post because it made the post really cluttered-up if I left it in. If you are curious on what I have taken for each category feel free to pm me and I will send you the complete list. Again, stay in school and apply again in November! Best wishes to you!
