I often hear that the USC alumnus/alumna connection (network), is great in terms of getting a job. Someone told me that it's almost impossible Not to have a job if we graduate from USC. Does it hold true for any major (I'm an electrical engineering major)? It is kind of hard for me to imagine that someone hires you much more favorably to make the school network stronger.

Part of it depends on what part of the country you're trying to get a job in. I'd say USC is considered a much stronger advantage in the western US (including HI) than the east coast. It is of course an exaggeration to say that ANY school's degree or connection can GUARANTEE you a job, tho it of course can help to varying degrees. That said, I've heard it said that "All things being equal," folks tend to like hiring others who graduated from their school & USC alums are known to consider this in their hiring.

There are unemployed folks from all schools, including ivies, with degrees & without, including sometimes grad/pro degrees. The Maritime Schools & military academies are the only schools I know of that guarantee a job upon graduation for the duration of your service commitment.

Hawaii Mom...you crack me up!!! PERFECTLY SAID.

Kids, do not depend on anyone "getting" you a job. You have to do it. But let me tell you, those three little letters U-S-C are rather magical in Southern California!!!

Yeah, that's what I thought. USC is known for great connections with industries, but it would help only a bit, not whole lot. I needed to choose UCLA or UCS, but I think that I don't need to consider USC myth favorably to choosing USC. Thank you, guys, for a lot of info.

USC will help, but then it's up to you. In film, USC will get you in the front door, but if you are incompetent, difficult, rude, or lazy you'll be out the backdoor immediately. Plus you'll get a reputation and no one will hire you.

This is generally true in life regardless of where you go to school. One of the sweetest men I known from my Federal career was from Harvard and Deerfield. He was also one of the laziest. We had high school graduates who worked harder and became better investigators than him. He wound up getting downgraded and urged to retire.

My wife is still is in the Federal government. She supervises a Harvard grad who she thinks is brain dead. She has people with doctorates and law degrees who firmly believe their college diplomas make them something they are not-- competent and hardworking. Her best employee is an immigrant from some war-torned country in Africa.

So again, USC will give you entree, but if you are a screw-up it wouldn't help you.
