I am trying to help a friend whose dau goes to school out of the country (but she is a US citizen). She will be visiting this summer and they are thinking of touring some colleges. They will be doing the initial check of big/small/urban/rural to get a feel for what she might like, but we also talked about schools that are big on demonstrated interest. We discussed a few, but I wondered if there is a list somewhere on cc, or if we can start one, of schools big on demonstrated interest. Thanks cc'ers!

I think on a school by school basis, the Collegeboard has “Considered” under the Admissions info & “applicant’s interest” is there. (if that school has specified that)

Thanks, slumom. It would also be really helpful if people would post here their personal experiences with colleges that were very clear they pay attention to demonstrated interest (like Emory and Tulane, for instance).

My sons’ school’s college counseling office kept track of this, and I remember them flagging these schools for us. It’s been a few years now but I remember the following were on the “must visit/interview/etc” list:

Wash U, Emory, Bowdoin, Colby, Hamilton, Trinity College, Carleton, Rice

I only found out after my younger son was admitted that Northwestern considers interest as well. Glad he happened to visit twice!

Maybe Davidson too, not sure about that (but we visited!)

Union College in NY aslo factors demonstrated interest. The application has a list of several different ways that you showed interest- campus tours, open house, met an admissions representative at a college fair, metadmissions representative at your high school. An interview is also required, and on campus is strongly suggested if you live within 3 hours of the school. We live about 4 hours from Union. My D was accepted, and she had been to campus about 3 times and had met with coaches and professors when she was there.

Univ of Rochester, Case Western

Most of the large publics and HPYMS schools do not care about demonstrated interest. LACS often do, especially those in rural areas because they want to make sure you know what you’re getting. And of course if you live near a school that isn’t a large public, many would expect you to have taken the trouble to stop by at least one over that previous 3 years.

Of course, if your friend is living overseas, the schools will completely understand. She shouldn’t stress about it.

Yes, I have heard Davidson is big on showing inteerest…

Interest is very important at kenyon

Washington and Lee wants demonstarted interst and I believe it is important to Lehigh.

Thanks everyone! So, the list so far is:

Emory
Tulane
Washington & Lee
Kenyon
Davidson
Rochester
Case Western
Union
Northwestern
Wash U.
Bowdoin
Colby
Hamilton
Trinity College (which one??)
Carleton
Rice

Jym, if it is important to have accurate and verifiable information, I would encourage you to check the official sources, and take the information gleaned from high school guidance offices with a huge grain of salt.

As an example, your list includes a school such as Bowdoin. Not only is the school NOT big on demonstrated interest, it does NOT even consider it:

Check the CDS form and go to the C7 section:

http://www.bowdoin.edu/ir/images/cds2010-11.pdf

This should help you separate facts from fiction. Fwiw, in general terms, the most selective the school is, the less important the demonstrated interest will be. In addition, one needs to be able to recognize that some schools will say anything to … attract applications. :)

I think you can add Muhlenberg to the list. They do take serious notice when any prospective student visits.

Thanks, all.
Thats the point, xig. I don’t have time to double check all the suggestins. Appreciate the corrections to any errors.

How many schools are they considering? Certainly the list can’t be so long that they can’t google ‘common data set’ + ‘the schools name’ and check. Twenty schools might take an hour.

I think it’s a great idea for a thread, but it’s certainly not difficult to verify the schools they are interested in.

FWIW, from what I’ve read schools that report demonstrated interest has increased from under 10% several years ago to over 20%. Even someone who went through this in 2007 might have outdated information.

If time is of the essence, may I suggest you define a “target” area?

While I think that the “expression of interests” through individual visits is an exercise in futility, it might be helpful for one to try to visit different types of schools to form a better opinion of what is available. For instance, it might be nice to visit UNC-CH, Duke, and Davidson to identify the type of schools the “foreigner” might enjoy. The same thing for a comparison between Georgia Tech and Emory. On the Left Coast, one could focus on UCSD, UCLA, USC, and add a few LACs such as Occidental and the Claremont Schools … with the intent to develop a sense of the US “market.”

As far as expressing interest, one could earn higher dividends from exploring the schools and identify people worth corresponding with. One can safely assume that most schools have an adcom that is assigned to “special cases” such as US citizens living abroad. Starting a dialogue should not be hard as several issues such as evaluations of grades and EC for people living abroad all provide options to open the door.

I started a similar thread recently – http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1162381-these-schools-say-show-me-love.html However mine was about a list of 6-7 specific schools. I got a lot of good advise – along the lines of “there are many ways other than visiting to show demonstrated interest.”

George Washington dinged a young woman from our school who didn’t visit, so I think they should be added to the list whatever they say on the CDS. (GC told us she called them to find out the reason for the non-acceptance since she had better stats by quite a bit than some who were accepted.)

^ I can’t remember which thread I mentioned GW on, but they have gotten pickier over the last several years. If you live close enough to make a day drive and never bothered you may find yourself rejected, or WL’d, with quite good stats.

Add Lehigh, Carnegie Mellon.
