I’ve only been able to find overall acceptance rates for all of the boarding schools I’m applying to, however, I am applying as a 10th grader (currently 9th) so I know they take less students than for 9th grade admissions, but I’m also assuming less apply.
It’s fewer, not less.
AFAIK, no school breaks out acceptance by grade. But yes, fewer apply for 10th.
Many 9th graders apply as repeat 9th graders. And some schools may suggest this Fl some applicants.
A few schools actually bring in many 10th grade students. You can ask the AO’s about increase in class sizes between 9th and 10th. We know students who attended JBS or other schools and applied for admission as repeats in 9th - but also know kids that applied for 10th. I think for some schools it may actually be easier to get into 10th grade because of few applicants. Just my experience with people we know.
This question was asked at a Putney information session and they said that acceptance rates tended to be higher as applicants got older because they often seem to be self-selecting and because they’ve gone through some high school already, they know what they want in a high school. I think that might lead to students finding schools that are better fits for them, making it more likely to be accepted.
This might only be true at less popular schools like Putney though. I imagine that with schools that have a boatload of applicants entering in sophomore and junior year, the same thing could be true with the opposite effect. Because there are so many students who know that the school is a good fit, it could lead to a much more competitive applicant pool.
