Is there actually a course on competitive Super Smash Bros at Rice?

I interested in applying to rice, and when I was going through their course catalog, I found out that there is a course called “COLL 196 - COMPETITIVE SMASH”

Description: This class involves analysis of gameplay, the theory behind different options, and the improvement of one’s skill in the video game Super Smash Brothers Melee.

Does that course actually exist? (It’s kind of weird that “brothers” is spelled wrong in the course’s “long title”). If so, does Rice offer a lot of non-serious courses like this?

That’s a student taught course! You can search for those if you go to “College Courses” under “Department” at courses.rice.edu. (https://courses.rice.edu/admweb/!SWKSCAT.cat?p_action=QUERY&p_term=201720&p_ptrm=&p_crn=&p_onebar=&p_mode=AND&p_subj_cd=&p_subj=&p_dept=COLL&p_school=&p_spon_coll=&p_df=&p_submit=)

Any student can sign up to teach a course in a subject of his/her interest, and any student across the university can register. They don’t really count towards your degree or GPA (they’re just 1 credit and you Pass if you attend), but they’re a great experience. I took one or two when I was at Rice; they were really fun and I got to explore some interesting topics. Some of the upcoming ones for Spring 2017 are Introduction to Basketball Analytics, Board Game Theory, Philosophy of Coffee, etc.

These are the only “non-serious” courses you’ll find–but they’re really great experiences!

Yes, these are real classes! Within the last couple years there was a course which studied Survivor (the TV show).

Thanks guys! That sounds really cool!

wow I have to take that class lol
