S is interested in a Sports Management major in college(current HS junior). We've compiled a list and Rice is included.
It is by far the smallest of the schools he is considering and probably the most selective.Putting aside the idea of whether he would be admitted, can anyone here tell me of their experience with this major at Rice..anyone know anyone who is in the major?
We know its a small cohort but with excellent connections to the Houston Major Sports market for internship possibilities.
Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks!

Better late than never, huh? Here's a response from a friend of mine that has pretty close ties to the athletic/sports department:

The sport management program at Rice has improved dramatically over the past few years. Two new professors have come in and turned the program around, creating an emphasis on practical application in the field, emphasizing experience over theoretical approaches. The major includes courses in sport marketing, sport law, media relations, event management, sport finance, etc., and is the closest thing at Rice to an undergraduate business degree. The new professors have been a fantastic help in getting students internships in several Houston sports organizations, and spring 2005 saw 10 Rice sport management students land internships. This number could very well increase in the future as the pipeline between Rice and these organizations continues to strengthen. The professors say that there are three things you need to advance in the sport industry: education, experience, and connections. Rice can provide all three.
