I am trying to visit that weekend and the hotels seem to be either fully booked or posting really high rates compared to what I had booked previously in February. Would this not be a good weekend to visit. We are driving 6 hours so I want to be sure we get a good visit out of it.

The Orange vs. Blue Spring Football game is being held on 4/12. I wouldn’t think that would be a big draw. I would suggest calling one of the hotels directly and ask what is going on.

Tom Tom Festival (though that’s not well known outside of the area)
Monticello Trail Wine Festival

Honestly, it might also be the wedding season. There are so many weddings in the area in the spring and summer because of all the beautiful vineyards, inns, and farms here.

Probably as you say, some general spring events. I guess I can get a hotel in Richmond overnight as we are then traveling to Willamsburg. It seems to be on the way and only an hour away. I was hoping to spend the night and get a feel for the town. I think we will just hang around a bit after the tour and then drive to Richmond.

There are some sorority and fraternity parent’s weekend at that time.

If you are travelling east-west along I64, there are many affordable motels in Waynesboro, which is about 15 minutes west of Cville. They don’t have the big price swings you find in Cville. Sometimes it is faster to drive into the U. from Waynesboro than from a hotel on Rt. 29 north in Cville.

You might also consider staying east of Charlottesville rather than west since you are going to Williamsburg after your Charlottesville visit. The Best West Crossroads Inn (Zion Crossroads, Gordonsville area) is a few miles east of Charlottesville (you could stay in Charlottesville all day and then head to the hotel after dinner, for instance). AAA rates of about $116 for two double beds.
