Is there any benefit in taking US History for a non-humanities major?

I plan on majoring mechanical engineering. Would there be any benefit in my taking the US History subject test? Would it look nice on transcripts even if I was applying to a STEM-oriented school?

It depends on where you apply, some schools like it more than others. However, almost all colleges like it because it shows you are versatil and have knowledge in areas out side of math and science.

Assuming you can ensure a good score, I’d definitely go for it. It is, at the very least, a way to keep doors open. After all, even if you’re currently a junior, you might change your mind regarding a major in the upcoming year; it would be unfortunate to have to fit another SAT II in during busy, stressful senior year. (This comes from personal experience: for years, I intended to major in philosophy, but I switched to undergrad business over the summer, so I had to cram in science and math subject tests this year.)

Besides, a good score could hardly hurt you. If anything, it will set you apart from the other applicants who only took science- and math-related subject exams. You’ll be able to demonstrate a broader base of knowledge, as stpeters51 pointed out.
