Is there any point in my trying to transfer after a year?

I did horrible in highschool. I'm in my last month or two now. I have a 2.8 roughly and failed some classes even. I was in all Regents. I go to school in NY though so classes are harder. I discovered Reed College this past month and want to go there more than anything. I'm going to a community college next year to get my basic required classes for cheap and get my grades up to where they used to be. Sophomore year I was a 98 overall average and it dropped considerably. Is one year enough time to get my average up and transfer? I have a 1400/1600 SAT. I just don't know if there's any point. I don't want to be in community college for 2 years. I want to go to Reed after the one year. Is there any point in me trying? Would I have a shot if I have a 3.9 in community college with my scores I have now?

I think you would definitely have a shot if you could prove that you matured in community college and became really serious about your academics. You have a good SAT score, and you know (based on your Soph grades) that you CAN do very well in school! If the possibility of transferring to Reed keeps you motivated in community college and you raise your grades, I think Reed would consider you a good applicant (especially if you wrote a really good essay explaining your transformation and upward trend!) Good Luck.

I think you have a good chance too- but I would suggest don't take english 101- as the hum110 experience is intregal to Reed .
I would contact Reed and explain your situation and see what they suggest- I think showing you can do the work, but still starting as a freshman would be optimum- they like older freshman anyway.

I dont think any attempt at saying your "classes are harder" is going to help you much. Reed is going to be 10X harder at least, regardless of where you are coming from.

What classes should I take in community college next year that will impress Reed? I want to start off Liberal Arts General Studies major and specialize once I decide what I want. I'm really in a tough spot. I want to go, but I can't just go. I need to try to get my grades where they used to be and try to transfer. If I transfered as a sophomore I would be 18 going on 19. Isn't that a little old to start as a freshman? Just wondering..

My daughter took a year off before starting Reed. She was 19 & 3 months.

Would it be weird if I transferred in as a junior? Assuming if I got in of course. I feel like transferring will make it harder for me to make friends and fit in. I'm already the shyest person ever. I want to go so badly but I can't this year, and I want to go at the right time. Maybe going in as a freshmen would be a good idea? What do you think?

ps. Thanks for all the awesome advice!
