Question as above. I am taking 5 AP exams in May and 3 SAT Subject in June, so I am seriously considering cancelling my registration for June ACT. Should I?

Honestly, it depends on the colleges that you are looking at. You should check each to see which tests they require. Some ask for one or the other and some are specific. If you don’t want to take the ACT so soon and you feel you won’t be prepared you can always take it in the fall instead.
Good luck on all your tests, we’re rooting for you!

@peytonmg Thanks. Do you know if I can change my June ACT to a later time? I tried to change it but June was the latest time available to change it to.

@fairyfantasy I’m not sure about changing it to later than June, as it seems to me that is when the last date for the 2013-2014 school year is? Here is the information that ACT lists on their website for changing dates: http://www.actstudent.org/faq/changereg.html … It doesn’t say anything about restricting changes on there, so I would just try calling the number there and seeing if anyone at ACT has an answer. Hope that helps!

How are your section scores? Also, how are your current practice/expected scores for SAT and ACT? You know you need to get 35 in ACT to make it worth something. Unless you have 690 in Math or CR in SAT, I would suggest you to focus on AP and SAT2. Of course, if you have extra time and money, there is nothing to stop you from taking ACT. But make sure you at least try a couple practice test to see if it is worth to give it a try. If you get anything lower than 35, you are not gaining much except for waiving the SAT2 requirement for some schools.

@billcsho I got 2290(which is my highest one sitting score and also my super score) with CR 790 M 770(which is ridiculous because I am a junior in AP Cal BC and got 800 on Math lvl 2 subject) W 730(essay 8, really bad essay score that I think I should be able to raise). I got 2080ish twice last year so 2290 is my 3rd time. I already signed up for 3 other SAT subject tests in June. I have a compulsion to take the SAT again aiming for 2400 but because of the “3 times rule” I registered for ACT with a fee waiver. I am applying to Yale, Cornell, U Penn, Columbia, Rice, Stanford(mb), Carnegie Mellon, Pomona College(mb), and UT Austin for backup. My EC’s are so-so with no big awards unless I become a National Merit Scholar/Finalist next year.

CR+M at 1560 is very good. There is little reason for retaking SAT1 or taking ACT unless you are aiming at certain scholarships. For admission, 2290 is not going to be different from 2400 in most cases. Nevertheless, ECs are very important for the top schools on your list. You better use your time more wisely to increase your chance for those schools instead of taking SAT1 or ACT.

@billcsho Thanks! I think I am probably going to try either postponing or cancelling the ACT test. I feel like having it scheduled in June is only going to add on to my stress. Could you please chance me? Thank you so much!

@billcsho Thanks for responding! Could you give me some advice on what to improve and what I am lacking in order to “match” with universities like Yale and Stanford?

“M 770(which is ridiculous because I am a junior in AP Cal BC and got 800 on Math lvl 2 subject)”
They’re testing your ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure.

@fariyfantasy

Unless you are a truly special applicant (elite athlete, kid of the president, etc.), you are not going to be a match at Stanford and Yale. The best applicants have maybe a 50-50 shot to get into these schools, and you could be there, but match means "highly likely, but not certain).

As for your initial question, there is NO reason to take the ACT at this point. Anything above a 750 (or some will even say a 730) will do almost as much good as an 800. I got a 2310 on my SAT (superscored out of 2 sittings), and took that score, without looking back. Would a 2400 have been cool? Sure, but it would have done me no good. Actually, out of all the practice and real tests I took, I only twice got an 800 on math- once on the PSAT and once on the SAT. The ACT curve seems a little easier (because it has fewer stopping-off points), so I do wonder if I could have gotten a 36 (I never even took a practice test), but who cares.

@SurvivorFan
Sorry, I am not very familiar with terms such as “reach” and “match” so I must have misused it in my original sentence. What I meant to ask is: “Is there anything I could do that could help me increase my chance?”

@fairyfantasy

Look, you will be a very competitive applicant at those schools. I would actually call them “high matches” for you, which means that they are kind of toss-ups, but, with a gun to my head, I would predict that you will get in.

“Match” is not just defined by the scores relative to admission stat, it also depends on the admission rate. Matching schools should give you at least 50% chance of admission. For top schools, one may only get 20-30% chance even with perfect stat so they cannot be a match for anybody. You can do some test in Parchment. For instance, ACT 35 with subject tests at 800 and all AP at 5 and GPA 4.0 still gives a 20% chance of admission at Stanford. Once you have the admission stat, it will depend on many other factors such as hooks, legacy, EC and essays. Top schools are not short of high academic quality applicants. The admission officer at MIT said they can remove the whole admitted class and fill all the seats again with equally qualified students easily. So you really need to try to stand out from the crowds.

@billcsho Thanks! I will look into Parchment stats. I suppose that means no one is a match for HYPS unless they won national achievements like Siemens?

Nope. If your CR amd M scores are that high, you are fine. You do not need to sit for the ACT. Great job and best of luck!
