According to the SAT/ACT conversion charts, my ACT score converted to a "1680 SAT score." That is 100 points better than my SAT score.

I live in Washington and I'm applying to Washington State University, University of Washington (Seattle), and University of Oregon next year -- all state schools.

Should I just take one test to study during the summer and focus on that test's strategies or should I take both again? Please keep in mind that the ACT and SAT test dates are less than one month apart (Sept.-Oct.). Also, I heard that most colleges look at just the composite ACT score and not all of the sub scores, but for the SAT colleges look at mostly the CR/M sections. If this is true, should I take the ACT test again and just try to hammer the English/Reading to get my composite score up since I really struggle with math concepts??

Thanks for your advice!

*Side note:
WSU priority app due: Jan. 31st
UW priority app due: Nov. 1st
UO ED app due: Oct. 1st (before SAT test date...)

I'm thinking since you seem to be better at the ACT you should focus on that test. I'm a big believer in taking the tests twice, especially if you are willing to do some targeted studying.

Math is your low score on both tests. The good news is that it's the easiest score to bring up with some studying. If you decide to take the SAT again, search these forums for reference to "the Xiggi method" - he's a poster who has a great self-study method. If you go for the ACT, work on all sections but especially the math.

If you've got a 3.5 GPA, your ACT is well within range of those admitted to the two Washington schools now. I would try the ACT again, and try to raise the composite. It would be nice to raise your math score, but no subscore is a deal-breaker.

(If your GPA is below 3.5, your odds at WSU are still pretty good, but those at UW fall.)

Yeah, my GPA is low (3.09), so I really need to improve my test scores. I have taken rigorous classes throughout my high school career, and I have some good EC's. I also play varsity sports and am working a full time job as a summer hire at McChord Air Force Base right now. Hopefully, with all of that I can get into WSU. I know UW is a reach, but I'm going to apply anyways. WSU has the major I want anyways. I want to go into Sports Management.

And thanks for the advice. I'm leaning more towards the idea of studying for the ACT during the summer and taking the test again in September. If I studied hard enough I think I can obtain a 27+. If I got a high ACT score I wouldn't have to submit my SAT scores on the application, right??

And one last question: Not knowing much about the system of these standardized tests, I sent both, my SAT and ACT scores to the the respective colleges I want to attend. I wish I would've never sent both of them. The website said you can choose 4 colleges to send the scores to for free, so I thought I would take advantage of that. BIG MISTAKE! So can I still only submit my best ACT score and just not post my SAT score on the app?
Would that be a good idea?

Don't worry about having sent your junior year scores. All that does is get you on a bunch of lists for them to sent recruiting letters. They won't go into your application file- you don't even have an application file! In the case of both UW and WSU, you will enter your scores yourself on their application, later to be confirmed by the official copy. In fact, in the case of UW (my d. applied and was accepted this year), they will specifically ask that you not have your school send an official transcript - they will ask you to fill in the grades yourself, and only ask for your transcript after admission.

Fleishman,
Since you are working summer hire I assume you might be an Air Force dependent. Sorry I don't remember exact details, but there is some kind of free test prep software available for active duty dependents--do you know about it? Seems to me it is sponsored by the NFL or one of the other pro leagues......you could check for info at the base library or teen center at McChord. Good luck!

take both tests gain. some schools will take the best of either test. since you did better on ACT's, it will probably benifit you to take them again. you should also take SAT's again because you have some low scores in certain subjects.

I would take the ACT again and do some serious prep - especially on the Math. At my daughters school (a State U) your math scores would mean you would have to do a remedial math course before you could do college algebra. You might check with the school you are planning on and see what their policy is.

Fleishman - I strongly agree with previous posters. Locate the Xiggi Method on this site. Follow the method. You may surprise even yourself! Best of luck.

PS, And please stop worrying about past errors -- as I'm sure your coaches have told you many times, you can't change the past so focus on the future!
