Is there any truth to the rumor....

that you cannot make finalist if you have a C?

My son got a C in math his junior year. Only one on his transcript. Takes a murderous curriculum, and is still AP Calculus this year despite his struggles in math last year. Has a GPA of 3.6 UW, 4.0 W.

I don't think the statement about the C is true, but I wanted some input.

I would like to know as well. I’m aiming for SF/F this coming fall.

I have several Cs though :(.

Not true!

You can have a C as a semester grade on your transcript and make NMF. I know that this subject comes up every year and those with one C on their transcript make NMF as long as their other grades are mostly As & Bs. So, if the GPA is something like 3.5 with one C, it’s ok.

Of course, if the one C is only a quarter grade, then it won’t likely be on a transcript. Quarter grades rarely are on transcripts…often only semester grades and/or year-end grades are on transcripts.

Thanks, M2CK. It actually was a semester grade, with a B the other semester. BUT… strangely, his school only reports a single year-end grade on the transcript, and it was a C. He was one point away from a B.

My kids’ high school only reports a “year end” grade on transcripts as well. Many kids like that because if you get a B in one quarter and your year end grade is an A, you still have “all A’s”.

If your son got 3 B’s for 3 quarters and 1 C for a quarter, it’s strange that the year-end average was a C…unless the B’s were “borderline low B’s” and the the one C was a low C.

Anyway…one C shouldn’t keep him off NMF. His overall GPA is good. That said, I would talk to the teacher about bumping that C to a B.

Keep in mind that NMCorp is not going to see his first semester grades for senior year. The grades get sent around October.

I made finalist with around a 3.6 unweighted. C’s? I had like 4 and an F or something…

^Sounds like me :). Thanks for the reassurance!

In the only case I know about in which an NMSF did not qualify for finalist based on grades the GPA was less than 3.0.

Do SAT scores go into evaluation for Finalist?
If so, how low for an individual test score For composite? Do they use all three or just M and CR in composite?
Thanks

performersmom…The overall SAT score is what will be used as “validation” for the PSAT score. Normally, a score in the 1960-2000 range will be high enough. There’s no need to “match” the PSAT score (i.e. a 220 on the PSAT doesn’t need a 2200 SAT to qualify). To count, the SAT must be taken between October of the student’s sophomore year and December of their senior year.

Does anyone remember the deadline to send the SAT score? And where do you send it?

Pinot…You need to include NSMC as a score recipient on the score report, just as if it were a university. I believe the code is 0085. If the student has already taken the SAT and filled out the score reporting form you will need to pay the fee to have another report sent, but it’s well worth the scholarship money that you get access to in return!! As long as NMSC has the score by the end of the year you should be fine, but the sooner the better in case there’s any kind of mixup.

You send it to NMCorp…code #0085 on the SAT form to send scores. You use that code just like you use a school code to send scores.

The last test date to send is this Dec’s SAT. So, that means Dec is the latest date to send scores. But, don’t wait til then…if you have a qualifying score (2000+ to be safe) then get it send now.

Do SAT scores go into evaluation for Finalist?

Yes…but only in a way to determine if you’ve met the minimum score…which is around 1960 (changes a bit year to year, which is why a 2000+ score is really safe).

Yes, all 3 sections are used, but the W score gets an odd calculation…so again, get the 2000+ to be safe.

You do NOT have to match the PSAT score…no!!!

OK - I went ahead and sent them. Thanks for the info!

I want to jump in and say that yes you can have a C as a semester grade and still make it to NMF! D had 2 semester C’s her sophomore year (both Chem Honors) and I had knots in my stomach until we got the letter confirming that she’d advanced from NMSF to NMF. Her overall GPA was a 3.97 though so she was a strong student but just struggled with Chem.
Best of luck!

Are you guys talking about the unweighted GPA? Or the weighted GPA?
