Just curious a friend applied to their hotel/hospitality school? and to my shock got in. She is a very average student and it really perplexed me she got into a top school.....does anyone know if its just alot easier to get into that particular school vs. the other schools at Cornell? It just had alot of us buzzing!

Each college at Cornell has different criteria and different acceptance rates. It's relatively easy to get into Hotel as opposed to say Engineering.

however those who get into hotel tend to have a great interest in the hospitality industry and have expressed interest in pursuing it, normally WITH great experience in the industry

this, however, is not always the case. in the scheme of things, the hotel school does have a lower average list of test scores etc

She probably fit into the hospitality industry really well. As you can picture, a really geeky nerdy person who gets 100s at everything and keeps to themselves wouldn't fit into the hospitality as a...say average AP student who loves people and is a great problem solver. If that helps...

also a current tour leader at the hotel school told me that they take the required interview, especially on campus, as a lot more than most people think....

perhaps that along with stellar recommendations and what not made her stand out. that does not seem out of the ordinary at all.

how difficult is it to get into ILR?

metfan, ilr is less selective than arts and sciences. your question is too broad.

If you're a Mets fan, it's impossible to get into ILR. ;)

All the schools look for certain things in their application. I know dumbasses who had 1800 on their SAT get into duke and people with 2100 not get in Penn state. If your friend is stupid and can not handle cornell, she will not get as far as you in life. But dont apply to a school just becuase its easier to get in, you'll hate yourself and probably your life if you hate your classes.

Engineering has the highest acceptance rate, as well as the highest score. People say stuff like girls can get in easier and its the hardest work load, bllahh blahh blahh.... My take is if you suck at math, science, computer science and reasoning skill. Engineering is probably HELL. But I know people of engineering that would probably flunk out of hte other schools. Hotelies are accpeted becuase they are good at whate they do and they love it. What else really matters? Plus hotelies on general are known to have good social and leadership skills. A little bit of social skill gets you much further in life in business/non-science industry much you than you think.

That's a bad question question in general. Apply to whichever school interests you the most, especially if you want to be an engineer or a hotelie. All the schools look at more than just test scores and grades, and the percentages are definitely somewhat skewed with confounding variables and the like. Hell, it's all just a crapshoot, so just roll the damn dice.

I think you are misunderstanding me. I am NOT applying to Cornell, the hotel industry doesn't interest me in the least. I was just curious cuz we were all so blown away, that she got in. But I am happy for her and hopefully this is what she wants to study, I mean I thought of Cornell was being such a tough school to get into thats why it threw me for a loop! I totally agree, go for what you are passionate about, it will ultimately translate into the success of whatever you do.

Nahh, College is just a crapshot anywhere. As I mentioned in my post, ive seen recruited athlete with 4.0 and 2200 SAT not get into WashU and 3.3 1800 no hook get into duke. My guidence told me there's acutally a guy with a 2.29 GPA get into American (which is a decent school).
