Is there some correlation between Cal Admits and UCLA admits?

I don't know if i am asking a fairly ridiculous question but I am really worried. I got into UCLA however i really want to go to Cal. I am out of state so i don't know that much about the UC system. Do the schools talk to each other on who to admit and who not to admit because i have been reading some threads where people are saying that not alot of students get admitted to both Cal and UCLA.
any advice would be great ^_^

a correlation is shown in my socal school, where if someone gets into ucla or cal they dont get into the opposing school unless they are extremely good in sports or are in the top 10 class rank.

do you think that this is the same for out of state students? One of my friends used to live in NorCal and she said the same thing because berkeley doesn't want to admit Socal students who will go to UCLA and vice versa...

The whole thing about getting into Cal and not UCLA (and vice versa) cause schools talk to each other is not true. The thing is, they don't talk to each other. They have no time to discuss each of their 40,000+ applicants and simply choose students that they think best fit with the school. I can say for myself that I made it into both schools even though I wasn't one of the top 10 in my class. And I wasn't recruited, either. An interesting tidbit I have is that I know more people getting into Cal and rejected by UCLA. LA was particularly selective last year for some reason.

And they were selective again this year.

Haha. Well, I'm not surprised. A whopping 50,000+ bunch v. Cal's measly 44,000 or so... LA has to make more sacrifices, obviously.

People tend to extrapolate based on random data. I don't think one campus decides based on another campus decision.
This is similar to the myth that Cal admits more from SoCal and UCLA+UCSD admits more from NoCal.
This could be based on how many apply to Cal from SoCal - look at last year numbers:
https://osr2.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/Access/DB/Frontends/runapp.pl
Select: Applicants with home location in California by county by ethnicity
21000 applicants from LA+Orange+SanDeigo Counties versus 7000 from SFO+SantaClara+SanMateo counties. Obvoisuly there will be more admits from SoCal into Cal than Bayarea...

yeah, I've been worried about the same thing, tapio.. If getting into UCLA means not getting into Cal, that'd destroy all my hopes for berkeley.. lol.. I read some of the threads too, and a lot were saying there's a very small chance you'll get into both UC's.. however I would have to disagree because of the same reason as kchen pointed out, they wouldn't have time to discuss some 50,000 applications..well I hope they don't have another system for this anyway...

has anyone else got into both UC's without extraordinary/amazing EC's and scores?

I know of a handful of people that got into both UCLA and Cal last year, as well as other universities such as BU, NYU, etc.

At my d's school over 50 students were accepted to Berkeley last year, and slightly less into UCLA. They are generally the same students. We are in So Cal. Nearly all students in the top 10%/15% of the graduating class apply to both.

At my d's school, there seems to be "Cal years" and "UCLA years" where many more students get admitted to one over the other. They seem to alternate. This is a supposed "Cal" year so we'll see what happens. We are in socal.

The best applicants do get into both. But for the next tier of students the probability of that happening is going to get slim. Eventually, there will be a group of students who get into one but not the other. Don't depend on statistics however because college admissions, especially for UCLA and Cal, are incredibly random and nonscientific.

That scares me. I got into UCLA, but I really want to go to Cal. What are the chances of getting in if you appeal?

slim..... unless you found like a cure for cancer or found a tremendously compelling reason why they should say yes to you,

Decisions haven't even arrived and you're thinking about appealing? Relax for two days!

haha, I got in after all. You were right, kchen. I needed to relax. :-)

i got into both cal and ucla and my sat was 1750/2400

probably cuz im hispanic but i have a 4.5 gpa so that helped

According to the tour guide at UCLA, 80% of UCLA admits who apply get into Berkeley and vice versa. I don't know how accurate that is.
