if you are a heop student you techinically get a full ride.

thanks, DanielJ, for clearing that up.

guys, as far as athletics go out, NYU isnt division 1 or 2, so i dont think theyre legally allowed to give out $$ for sports.

gotcha. thanks!

There is such a thing as a full ride @ NYU, but it is not solely based on academics.

I have a family friend that has a full ride to NYU and is in the pre-med track.

NYU can't give out "athletic" scholarships but they can still give money to athletes in the form of merit based aid if the athlete really needs it.

Any merit aid is given for academic merit and certainly, if athletes qualify academically, they can get it but the point is that $$ is not given to athletes for their athletic abilities. Need and/or academic merit only.

NYU is not bound by any agreements (like the ivy's are) to not give anybody money. They can give $$ to anybody they want, it is a private school.

suubie, it has nothing to do with Ivy/non-Ivy (Ivy's are also private). It has to do with NYU being Division 3. Div 3 schools canNOT give out scholarships based on athletic ability. They can give aid which is need-based and/or academic merit-based only. Only D1 & 2 colleges can offer athletic scholarships.

Well the thing is, even though by NCAA regulations Division 3 schools can't give "athletic" scholarhips, they can easily get around by giving them "merit" aid. This is how a school such as emory recruits so many athletes. I know for a fact that NYU also does this since my coach pushed for a scholarship for an old teammate on the tennis team. If NYU wants to give you money, they can give you money.

BigRed, like I said, it would have to be for academic merit or financial need. Otherwise your old teammate wouldn't have received any 'scholarship'. NYU's policy is that they don't give any $$ for musicians, actors, athletes, etc. It's stated on their website and is made clear during information sessions for those applicants.

BigRed is correct, nyu gives academic scholarships to athletes to get them to come here, and is pretty well known. Same goes to allowing grossly underqualified people into GSP (ive seen some sub 1000's with mediocre GPA). It may not be called an athletic scholarship, but thats why they get the "merit" scholarship or grant

As I recall, MLK Scholars also get very generous financial aid... Not sure if it's up to full tuition, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I got into NYU tihs year with a 40 thou family income (but we don't own a home) and they gave me 18 thou a year in fin aid and a 10 thou dollar scholarship, so it's possible to get some money... but other schools meet need so much better and 3 top 40 schools offered me 39 a year so yeah...

Intel finalists get a full tuition+fancy room+board scholarship to NYU, plus a "salary" to attend. However, even with that as an enticement most end up going to Harvard, Yale or MIT.

Well I know the guy who finished 7th in Intel, who got the above scholarship, and got rejected from both Harvard and UC Berkeley. LOL.

He's going to Stanford though.

I got 11K plus 4 K work study
they advise me to take out $31.625 in loans:((((
