I like everything about JMU. I just got admitted this past week and everything about it seems promising.

I'm just worried though, because diversity is very important to me and the demographic is 79% white, 4% Asian (I'm asian).

I got weightlisted to Virginia Tech and was planning to go there. If I do get in (unlikely), I will probably go to VT but I am stuck on making a decision because of the above reason. I'm planning to major in Business if that helps.

While not diverse, all races are tolerated and treated equally. VT, while slightly more diverse, is still a long way off. If diversity is that important, have you considered GMU?

Oh ok, thanks. I’ve considered GMU, but I’m not planning on going because it is so close to home.

JMU is known as one of the nicest campuses in America. I’m Black and I’m going there for the upcoming class of 2018. I was under the same circumstances as you as I got waitlisted my VT but accepted by JMU & GMU etc. I personally like JMU’s campus better and like you said the campus for GMU is too close to home for me (im from NOVA) and my friend from JMU who’s also black said he loved it there and said the people are ridiculously nice. You should go.

I’m in the Class of 2017, and I am Asian-American.

Overall, I would say the campus is tolerant. Inevitably, I do get Caucasians asking insensitively worded questions about me and making assumptions. It gets a little tiring, but how you deal with it depends on you.

The Asian organizations on campus are extremely active, and you can meet a lot of fun and interesting people in them if you choose to join them. They also network with the other organizations within their same vein with schools across VA (for example, JMU’s VSA is going to VCU’s VSA Culture show, etc.). There are even people that aren’t Asian in these organizations.

As far as majoring in business, JMU’s Business School is leagues better than VT’s.
