Is there truth to the saying "you are just a number" at University of Michigan?

If you go to Michigan, do you feel you are "just a number?" I would like to hear real U of M students' opinions, rather all the small LAC supporters saying this.

“Just a number” is a euphemism for the fact that they don’t baby you or reach out to you. This isn’t because advisors and professors don’t want to help, but because there are so many students that they don’t have the time to take the initiative to aid students.

This forces you to have more self-dependence and more of a willingness to go out and seek the help you need. No professor, GSI, or advisor will turn you away if you go to them (given it is at a time when they are available, but you’ll know exactly when these times are). I’ve found everyone here to be helpful and I’ve never felt like I’ve been a number, but it is important to realize the sheer number of students here, and in order to stand out as a person and to gain the attention and aid you desire, you need to take the initiative. If you sit back and wait for the university to come to you, you’ll have a bad time, and you will just be a number.

Very good points!

yes, but everything in the world is just about numbers. dont let them fool you otherwise

Once you have more than 5,000 students (including graduate students), you are going to be “just a number”. Every school in the top 30 save perhaps Dartmouth and Rice will not be able to treat undergrads on a first name basis!

umich will not hand you internships or jobs or almost anything else. you have to go out an take the initiative. Good prep for the real world.

You are just a number, so what? You were just a number to begin with anyways like everyone else.

Thisismichigan. Made me laugh. Thanks!

If you want your hand held, this is not the school for you.
