Here is the situation:
I am a 24 year old male about to finish an associates degree in Computer Information Systems from a community college. After this I plan on returning to a 4 year university. Last time I was there I was an English major, though I dropped out before graduating.
I plan on getting a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a double minor in English and Accounting. Meanwhile I am studying for IT industry certification tests (such as CCNA, A+, Network +). I am being told by some that the IT field is dying and I’ll never get a good job in IT. I’m hoping that the double minor in English and Accounting would make me more versatile and perhaps I could get a non-network engineer job such as Database Analyst. I am guessing the English isn’t very useful but I literally only need 6 credit hours (or two classes) to earn it due the fact that I already took some English.
However, I have more options. One thing I could do is exactly the same but replace CIS (computer information systems) with Computer Science. I have more of a passion in learning the type of things a CIS degree teaches than what I would be exposed to in CS. On the other hand if CS leads to jobs whereas CIS does not, I do not have a choice.
Another option is to just double major in CS and CIS, while forgetting about the Accounting/English minors.
I understand and accept that CIS will generally make less than CS. However: If I can manage to crack 50,000 a year (and I’m willing to work my way up to that rather than expect it right out of college) I am happy. Is the “CIS majors can’t find jobs” true? Would a double minor in English and Accounting + IT certification exams help any? If the answer is no, what should I do instead?
