My daughter is a solid B+ student (3.3 unweighted average) at a prominent private school in New Jersey. Great, all around kid, who plays varsity tennis, works at a tennis camp in the summer as a counselor, does fundraising for AIDS awareness and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She has a dynamic personality and SHOULD interview and would be very good in any interview. She has not officially taken the SATs yet, but practice tests lead me to believe that even with test prep courses/tutor she will not score higher than low 600s in each category of the test.

She wants to study biology and education and aspires to be a middle school science teacher, guidance counselor and tennis coach (for middle schoolers).

She prefers a warm climate and would like a significant jewish population/hillel at a school.

Here is our preliminary list of schools to visit/consider:

University of Miami
University of Maryland
BU
Tulane
University of Richmond
GW
American
Connecticut College
maybe Wisconsin or Michigan State?

Would love to hear opinions/suggestions....

She may want a safety all of these seem like matches/slight reaches. Add a SUNY or a New Jersey college to your list. Something that she is SURE to get.

Catholic U, while a very strong school, as the name appleis, does not have a Jewish population. some of theo others are not in warm weather climates.

My daughter had the many of the same preferences - warm weather, good school, lots of diversity, Jewish population. She currently attends Tulane. Your list is on target. You may want to add Univ of Florida (this may be a reach) and College of Charleston (match). I think most of the colleges you have listed are matches or slight reaches.

thanks for responding. two questions:
1. how does your daughter like tulane?
2. do you know what the approx percentage of northerners is at College of Charleston? Based on my research, the College of Charleston seems right on target in so many ways for my daughter. But I honestly don't know anyone here in NJ that attends....

Muhlenberg College...not warm location, great science department with new science building, education major and one third Jewish, plus close to home.

Answer to your questions - (by the way, we are from NJ)

My daughter likes Tulane alot. This may be a good fit since community services is an important element of your education at Tulane and your daughter seems to be very involved. Jewish population is at least 20 % - with lots of related activities. Lots of NJ/NY/Conn students also!

College of Charleston - Don't recall the stats for NJ/NY students - I thought that somewhere on their college website, those stats were available. Since this was one of the criteria when we were looking, I think there were enough "northerners" for us to at least consider. Also, there is an admissions counselor who handles NJ and some other states, and she can tell you. There was a Hillel club on campus, so there was some Jewish representation - I recall about 5%. Interesting though is that C of C felt like more like a "southern school" than others further south - has that charm being in Charleston.

I can not argue with most of the schools on your list - I know students who go to U of Miami, Tulane (in addition to my daughter), Wisconsin, and BU and they are very happy. Most of these campuses are spectacular and once you start visiting, you will be impressed.

Don't send her to Wisconsin, I mean, have her apply, it'll be a match-reach, but the education school is insanely competitive, and if you're going to squeak into the university, it might not be best.

Michigan State would be an auto-admit, but there are pretty much no jews.
