In many of my application essays i talk about how i want to double major in two things that i am equally passionate about: political science and art history. These two subjects are very different from each other but i did a good job explaining how they complement each other and why they appeal to me. Would this be something that makes me stand out since there aren't many people interested in these two things?

A hook is an Institutional want/need; for instance, URMs and recruited athletes.

What you are discussing may make you stand out as a unique combination of interests, but it’s not a hook.

Sounds like you’re explaining what your paper is about? (I thought a hook was usually the first few lines)

@pokekevin not that type of hook

Yeah it’s going to help you stand out :)

it’s a good topic, but not a hook. If you were an athlete, if you were famous, etc., then that would be a hook.

Not a hook.
