Is this a known issue in CommonApp with Naviance and how to get around it?

Hi, my daughter is applying for colleges through CommonApp. Her school is using Naviance system first time this year and it connects to the CommonApp for sending teachers recommendation. There is one issue here: she asked teacher A to only send his recommendation letter to 3 schools and asked teacher B to send her recommendation to another 2 schools. She applied total 5 schools in CommonApp system. The issue is: when both teachers submit their recommendation letters to the common app. Both teachers' letters are all assigned to 5 schools listed in the CommonApp. There is no flexibility here for teacher or student to pick which school to send in which letter. They are such low tech software systems in both Naviance and CommonApp. Does anyone know how to get around this issue? Some schools do not allow extra teacher recommendations. What should we do now? We can't remove teacher's recommendation from the CommonApp once teacher submitted the letter online. Can we write a note to college and tell them to ignore the extra recommendation letter from the teacher due to these systems problem? Any advices will be appreciated!

Perhaps contact the colleges – minimally speak w/your school guid counselor. I’ve seen where some schools are extending their EA/ED deadlines due to some hiccups with Common App. I didn’t read further but perhaps they’re addressing this very issue?

I believe this is a known problem with the new Common App - you can probably ask your guidance counselor to help - they have powers in Naviance which you and the teachers do not. The schools that do not allow more recs will just use the first rec they got.

Our guidance counselor said he can pick a specific recommendation in Naviance to go with each application. As an example we have 3 recommenders, some colleges accept 1 some 2 or 3 so there has to be some way of specifying the specific letter for the college. The counselor said he goes through the recommendation letters to match them up with what he believes the school is looking for.

Thank you for the replies. My daughter talked to her school counselor. Unfortunately the counselor didn’t have power to change teacher’s submission. To make things worse, the counselor said looks like teacher cannot even un-send the letter if he makes mistake. This is our school district’s first year to use Naviance system. The counselor said maybe we can contact Naviance company’s support people to see if they can do something there. Did anyone contact Naviance before? Why would the college application process become so complicated? Counselors and teachers, none of them are familiar with the Naviance and that system doesn’t seem to be flexible. Thanks.

Hi, I know this is late but I have your exact problem. Were you able to fix it?

Our school only allows us to submit the request in naviance, I believe to avoid the problem. We’ve not had any letters go out yet as they will not upload prior to the application being submitted but they told us explicitly not to request them in the common app and do it in naviance only or there could be issues.

Super late, by 3 years. The original ;poster is long gone, so an answer to your question id not forthcoming. Old threads should be used for research, but should not be revived. Closing.
