but if I see that a double major is not really doable I’ll just try to transfer to EECS and do a robotics/bioelectronics concentration or something.

Hello Diivio,
Now take a step back, the significance of this decision may be much greater than you think. College GPA is cumulative, you probably know that, but if you work the math out, your first semester is perhaps THE MOST CRUCIAL. Getting a high GPA your first semester is a MUST if you want to graduate with a 3.7-4.0.
As the semesters go by, the courses only get harder and thus it may be a wee bit difficult to do as well as your first semester. So for example, if you don’t get a 4.0 your first semester it’s virtually impossible to graduate with a 4.0. It’s like building a structure: you want your base to be a solid as possible. I achieved a 3.817 my first semester with 19 credits (mostly general education courses such as english and economics). My second semester I took 16 credits and earned a 3.697 and that brought my cumulative GPA up to a 3.841. A high GPA first semester is also nice if you feel you may not do as well the following semester, sort of like a safety net. Do you feel that you can do this? Engineering is 4+ hours spent daily in your dorm or library doing homework. pay no mind to the work study: very rarely do they exceed 10 hours a week.

It all boils down to have you previously demonstrated that you can do it? If you have then go for, I think you can do it no problem at all. Good luck!

Lol. You sound like me (doing a double major as well, MCB in neurobiology and Econ, less engineering and more decision making). Ok. This schedule is doable if you come from a very good solid mathematics and science background. The only problem I see if 61A, which isn’t tough, but it’s very time consuming. I don’t know what kind of school you come from, so I will just give you how I feel about these classes.

In HS, I spend about 3 years studying physics (Physics B, then C). So physics 7A was really a breeze for me. There are weekly online homework and they take about 1-2 hours for me (3-5 hrs for my friends).

Math 53. I took multivariable calculus in HS, so it’s more of a review. Even so, the class is still a little hard (the HS course wasn’t that proof based). So you will definitely have to invest some time. This is no longer the easy days of calculus when everything is duh and you can just do the homework and pass. 53 actually requires some conceptual thinking, 3D visualization (and drawing), and ability to do proof (which I am weak in). And also, homework takes a lot longer.

61A, so I also did CS A and AB in HS. 61A was simple, but the lab took awhile to finish. This is the big no no that I don’t recommend for your first semester. It’s not that the class is that the class is that hard, but the fact that it’s very time consuming.

BioE10. I never took this class, but my friends who took it says it’s not that bad.

All in all, I don’t recommend this schedule, especially that this is your first semester. Take out CS 61A and Math 53 and put in 2 breadthes. The reason: 1, you don’t know how prepare you are for Berkeley level courses. The last thing you want is to fail all these classes because you overloaded and then retake it (also screw up any chance of college transfer, and overall GPA) 2. First semester, make some friends, get involve, and build up a support for the next 4 years. Don’t end up locking yourself in the library and find yourself friendless while everyone else begin to form groups. While classes is important, the people you meet in Cal will make a far bigger impact on your life.

So spend your first semester scouting things out. Audit courses (not enrolled, but go to lecture and see how it’s like.) if you are really bored (most likely you will be). If you find it too easy, then load up second semester (I had 20 units my second semester, and I will prob get 18 units next semester). Hope it helps.

Oh yeah, one more thing: professor matters a lot. Don’t get Harvey for 61A. Get Yildez over Zettel for 7A if you really decide to go for these classes. Both of the 53 professors are awesome.

Actually, the choices are Yildiz and Lin for 7A this sem

thanks you guys, especially for the detailed info javacrunch and hunterbeetle. I know it’s def not going to be easy and although I’ve done a little multivaraible, Calc-physics, and comp sci in HS, it’ll prolly be more theoretical rather than my HS classes (I had a 4.0 in HS, but that was a joke so it’s no comparison to Berkeley I’m sure). I’m a little nervous so maybe I’ll take a seminar instead of the BioE 10 since I might not want to do BioE and a high GPA is required to transfer or dual major with EECS. thanks you guys! I really appreciate it!

lol

but yea, you want the high gpa
