Is this a trend? It made me wonder.

We received two college letters today addressed to the parents of "rrah's D." Both letters were from privates within the top 100 or so U's.

Both started out in a similar fashion by specifically mentioning the current economic environment. The letters both reviewed merit aid at the respective schools and financial aid. Both highlighted the "value" of the education provided at the school.

D did send SATs to both schools but has not yet submitted her application.

Getting two similar letters on the same day made me wonder if many privates are sending out similar letters? It also made me wonder if some lower ranked privates are not receiving the number of applications they expected this year.

Any comments?

I think it's safe to say that all colleges are worried about the economy and are moving to shore up their position. I think we'll see many varied "marketing" efforts with value propositions.
