It is weird, I feel like my high school senior is getting more mail since ED decisions came out. We are one and done (thank goodness) but it is interesting to see the uptick in mail in even the last week. I don't know if it had to do with most recent ACT score, but just wondered if there is a push across the board to get these kids applying prior to Jan 1.

I thought I was the only one who noticed a big increase. A lot of the email is reminding about RD deadlines, mostly Jan 1. Or it could be more recent ACT scores, too, I’m not sure.

My junior gets a lot too. It probably has something to do with PSAt and SAT scores that came out.

These schools are a bunch of scam artists, sending out invites and slick brochures to unsuspecting parents and students in the hopes of ginning up their application/acceptance ratios and making money. I figured it out that schools like Cornell, for example, that get 30,000 applications a year are grossing $2 million just on application fees! but fewer than 10 percent of the kids have a chance to get in! My advice is to stick to your six or 8 colleges and don’t waiver, except for safety schools if you need one at this point.

Tell your kids not to check the box on SAT’s. ACT’s or PSAT’s and they won’t get any mail.

One bin overflowed. Working on filling a paper bag. I look at all that wasted money that could’ve paid for more students’ college. And if we didn’t answer back after the 5th or 6th glossy brochure, we probably won’t on the 7th. And the email is unreal! Lots of “you are special and we’ve extended the deadline for you”.

But in all that mail we did find two gems that got my S excited, so it’s worth opening up every single one! I took on that job as “secretary”.

Emails suddenly increased in tempo past three weeks, particularly from two schools that daughter took off Common App list. Suspect this will end after Jan 1.Had no idea this was the wide net until the past few months.

No increase here. We are only getting mail from places to which D applied or whose presentations see attended. Emails are getting a little weird though

Glad to see I wasn’t imagining it. We are completely finished – ED to one school. Still receiving mail from the same schools – especially the schools that were recruiting as athlete - but was surprised at how many schools that have come out of the blue just this last week. Never heard from them previously, never showed any interested, but getting last minute push in mailings and emails. I know it is a marketing tool but seems crazy that a kid would apply to a school in the last week of the process that they haven’t had any contact/interest/visits beforehand.

I think the schools are taking advantage of the stress of the kids – hey, I am starting to panic that I am not getting into any schools on my list, so lets throw on a few more.

Same happened to us last year. Funny thing is I still get random mail from schools even now that my D has finished her first semester.

We seem to be suddenly getting a higher level of college mail - the next tier up, so to speak. I mean D always got mail from Chicago and WUSTL, but now D is getting mail from other elite colleges notably the Seven Sisters. I’m wondering if their acceptance rates aren’t low enough? The application pool shrank? January 1 and 15 cannot come soon enough.

More targeted mail here. Just the same half dozen over and over. Also some holiday wishes mail from where S was accepted.

A couple colleges in TX are still sending me mail, and I still get a fairly steady stream of emails. I got a new email account sometime after taking the PSAT, and my new email is only on the latest SAT, and since the original email I used was actually my dad’s, mainly a lot of the emails go to my dad (though he doesn’t use that account much anyway.)
