is this an EC?

this might be really stupid, but still...

i have been ordering TIME, New Yorker, Discovery and read them
is reading thoses magazines considered an EC?
would i be able to write in my college application and essay that one of my EC's is reading TIME, Discover, and New Yorker?

It is an EC but not something that's app worthy and definitely not essay worthy.

I actually disagree, a friend of mine based her essay on her reading of the NY Times for 4 years of high school and it was a great starting point for her. She basically wrote about how everything from politics, to science, to art influenced her life. (She got into Columbia ED.) If you call it an EC and it will start to look TOO forced in the eyes of the reader.

Well some colleges have essays on what magazines you like to read ;)

I don't think it'll really work in your favour if you put that down under the ECs column. You might write an essay about it if that's what you really want, but under the EC column might be pushing it a bit.

Maybe you can write it down as a hobby? I do some nonprofessional music recording(not school related) for fun--do I add this as a resume under "Hobbies" and send it with the common app?

so if i dont concern it as a EC but as a hobby, i can mention it in my essay right?

I think that you can put it an an EC, why not? What you have to understand is that these college admissions offices are trying to get a feel for what kind of person you are, what you like to do, etc. You want your college apps to paint a vivid and distinct picture of yourself. If this is something that consumes a portion of your life, then I don't see why you can't put it on your application. If you have interesting stories related to the reading of these magazines, you could even write an essay on it (though only you could decide that). Hopefully you have some othere good EC's and essay choices at your disposal though.

If it's apart of your life, it's legit.
