Is this an okay essay topic?

I'm completely stuck and was thinking about writing my personal essay about coffee. Why I like to drink coffee/what kinds of coffee I like/how much a cup of decaf relaxes me and stuff like that. I'm horrible at writing personal stuff and this is the only topic I can think of that wouldn't result in a contrived, stuffy impersonal essay.

I was also considering writing about how much growing up in Thailand and Hong Kong has shaped my view of the world but I don't know if it would be a boring typical topic that wouldn't leave an impression at all.

Is the coffee thing okay or would 500-ish words about the joys and different kinds of coffee be dull and/or not serious enough? :-S

There is no bad topic for an essay. It’s all in the execution.

But with that said, I would probably remember an essay about coffee better than another travelogue variation if I was an admissions officer. If you truly love coffee, I’m sure you’ll find a way to show it in your essay.

Does a “why I like coffee” essay show them what they want to see? Umm, rarely. You don’t want a “so what?” reaction.

Assume this is for transfer? These are not ordinary essays. They want to see the attributes they need at the school- a lot is what you “show, not tell.”

Personally the second topic sounds better
