I was wondering if this was a bad essay topic. I don't want a boring, general, and woe is me essay. I was thinking about writing about a service trip I did. (So overused right?) Well, to get out of that category, I was thinking about tying it into why I want to major in elementary education. How my time there influenced this. Is that a bad topic?

There’s no such thing as a bad topic! Yours is actually quite good. Most of the time, the “international trip” essay turns into what adcoms categorize as “outward bound essays.” To avoid this, do not say how it made you aware of what was out in the world or that it opened your eyes to new cultures.

If you stick with your idea about wanting to teach because of the experience you will have a winning essay!

Best of luck,

I’d respectfully disagree with majority of what Lehigh said. Yes there are no bad topics, but there are also no “good” topics. Your topic is fairly common, but what matters isn’t the topic but the essay itself.

An essay about working at minimum wage in a coffee/donut shop can be an incredible essay. It can also be a terrible one. Same with any topic. Write a good essay about something that you’re passionate about or something important to you. Don’t worry about the topic.

I guess what I meant to say is that yours sounds like it can be a good essay as in it has potential. Clearly the topic alone can’t make an essay good. Sorry about that!

Thanks! I get what you’re saying. I just don’t want it to turn into something boring and something that everyone tries to write about.

It’s all in the approach. Do not worry about it being a commonplace topic. Try to think of a very creative way to format your essay. I know I’m not really telling you too much, but it’s hard for me to envision the essay without knowing more about your experience.
