Ok, so today I just found that my school does not individually rank and instead only gives unweighted gpa decile ranges. There isn't even a valedictorian. Would a person in the top 10% (who would have been val if not for lack of a val position) look worse than a val?
Thanks all. I just found out my ranking today.

It’s not terrible, but top 10% doesn’t look as good as val. In the end, I doubt that such a difference in rank makes or breaks anyone.

It doesn’t matter. You’re not even the official Val until school is over and you’ve already been accepted to a college. Top 10% is the most important of the two. I would put taking the most challenging curriculum up there as well.

My school determines the official one based on only the first 7 semesters of high school, so it goes on the transcript with midyear reports.

No it’s not really detrimental. I’ve looked at the common data sets for most top schools, and they usually report about half if not a bit more of their incoming class coming from schools that don’t rank so it doesn’t appear to hurt an applicant at all.

my large, well known public school stopped ranking entirely to HELP students get into colleges.

Depends on the schools you are applying to. Ranking is not the most important thing they look at since most of the high schools stop ranking their students as other members have mentioned. Schools look for students with different skill levels, and great personality. So don’t worry
