Is this considered community service?

There is this retirement home really close to my house that I'm interested in volunteering at. The problem is I don't know if this is considered volunteer service because it is a private organization. Don't you have to work for a non-profit organization in order for it to be considered community service? I asked if they accept volunteers and they said they do.

For some reason, I started the same thread on the College Admissions board and no one replied.

IMHO, I think it is considered community service, no matter the status of the facility. You would be going over there and providing various small services - helping out in the office, playing games or helping someone write a letter, even nothing more than sitting down to talk with someone who may not have had a visitor in a long time...all things they would be paying staff to do...or things that would not be done at all, if you didn't go.

I agree- something that you are not doing for personal gain, but to benefit the community- would be considered community service
I think that is a great idea- and you may even get a lot more out of it than you expect- good luck :)
