Is this even right? What a ripoff.

<p>Hello all,</p>

<p>I am currently taking some classes at Long Beach City College, and I came across this small issue. In my Sociology class, we are to register with Coursecompass.com and buy an access code for about $50. I personally found that buying books is not always necessary especially when you are very familiar with the subject. In worse case you can always use a book on reserve. So far it worked out just fine for me, I was able to pass all my classes with a grade no lower than a B.
So now all of the sudden I am required to pay an extra $50 just to gain access to my assignments, tests, grades? Our school's website has a feature similar to coursecompass.com, only free of charge. Although it does require that teachers spend more time on it.
Maybe I am not getting this right, but I was happy that I finally saved up to go to college this semester, I pretty much came within a few dollars to pay for my units.
When reviewing the course description, and outline I always look for material fees. I did not know anything about any additional charges until the first day of class.
I do not wish to drop this class, otherwise I will loose my health insurance. Any thoughts about this or ideas?
Thank you</p>

<p>Ask your professor if you need the access code for certain, but if you do I suggest you drop and take on another class. If you are still able to drop the class, you should still be able to add another one with more affordable resources. For the class you plan to add I suggest you email the professor ahead of time and ask about the cost of books, services, etc. Make sure to tell them your situation and financial limitations.</p>

<p>yup it’s right…my school has that too with some courses depending on professors.
Good thing about coursecompass is you don’t need the textbook since it pretty much has a digital version of the textbook online. You’ll see what I mean, it’s actually pretty handy, just the professor’s who use it normally turn out to be lazy because of its simplicity.</p>
