So no matter where I'm going I will defer for a year to be an exchange student. For various reasons my parents want me to accept to more than one college and are willing to shell out the dough to hold my spot, so that a year from now I will still have some flexibility for where I'm going. Can you DO that?

Doubt it. See which college will yet you wait a year

actually you can. i know MANY kids who defer for a year to do programs in Israel. In fact, a kid in my class defered from Case Western (where he got a scholarship) for a year in order to do a program in Israel.

Yeah, but defer at two different schools at the same time?

Two, no. You have to declare youre deferring from that particular school for a year.

you can do that if you want. First of all, unless you tell them they wont know. I actually deferred at one school and went to another school for my freshman year (because it was free for me). I knew I wanted to transfer after freshman year and i wanted to leave an option open so that I'd definetly have someplace to transfer if I didnt get in where I wanted. The school I deferred knew I was going to other place for my first year and i even used my university email address to contact them. Plus, they offered me a huge scholarship now if I go there for my sophomore year (so commiting to two schools migth not be so bad! One might give you more aid so that you'll chose them!) I'd say defer at two schools if you arent sure and you can tell the colleges that you are defering at more than one if you'd feel better about it but otherwise, I really doubt they'd even know.

Yeah, I think I could do it, I just have this feeling that the college acceptance police are gonna come after me or something..lol. But it's not like they can really do anything..plus I don't think I'd tell them.

Is it defering if you are an exchange student? Don't you have to choose a school to go through their exchange program? Or do you just mean that you will be traveling for a year before settling down at school?

I don't think that you can defer 2 schools at once because basically, you'd be asking 2 schools to hold a place for you. I'm fairly sure that as part of the deferral process, you'd need to put down a deposit and promise to attend after your gap year.
The only way, however, to know for sure about the rules would be for you to contact the individual colleges and ask.

If they say it's not possible, do know that if they find out that you deferred 2 colleges, they both probably will rescind your admission. That's what colleges now do when they learn that students have put commitment deposits on more than one college.

Plus, you'll be taking away a spot from someone who may want to go there.

Karma can be strange.
