is this schedule too hard for a freshman?

hello everybody, this is my tentative schedule for now.

i am taking

math1a - wodzicki
chem1a - stacey, boering, majda
comparative lit - fischer
phsycology - khilstrom
physics for future presidents - muller
total: 18units

i heard that pffp and phscology are fairly easy classes. i took calc bc and chem in high school so i am assuming they will be not too difficult. the only problem is that i heard the writing department is very challenging. does anybody know something about comp lit? should i actually drop it? btw i'm mcb. thanks for any help!

... you're kidding, right?

actually i'm not kidding =/

well maybe (hopefully) you're one of those crazy super smart kids. I know if I had that schedule, I'd just die. I'm curious, why do you want to have such a full courseload your first semester?

thanks Going the Distance. lawl that program makes it alot easier.

AcidAlice: its just that some people told me pffp is pretty easy and at calso they even said people who got 5's in bc should probably take math53. alice, do you think that the schedule is challenging because of the number of courses? or because each class is pretty difficult. do you have any experiences with these classes?

Hmm.. I think this is a lot for a first semester schedule, but I'd say it's doable. It's five classes, but as you said, some of the classes are relatively easy and don't require a lot of work. PFFP and Psych shouldn't take up too much time. Math 1A should be a medium amont of work and pretty easy considering you've taken it before and it's not that hard here. Comp Lit and Chem should take up most of the time. And Comp Lit can actually be pretty easy.. it really depends on the teacher you get, but it shouldn't be too hard regardless.

The only question I have is why Physics C10? Do you think it will prepare you for Physics 8A/8B?.. because I honestly don't think it will very much. It's more of a conceptual, fun class that doesn't really touch on solving actual physics problems. Or maybe you want an easy A? Well whatever the case, you should only take it if you are genuinely interested in it, because it won't satisfy any breadths or anything for you.

As for you whole schedule, try it out for a little and see how you handle the courseload. You can always drop later. But if grades are a big concern to you (and they might be considering you might be pre-med), then it's better to take fewer courses and concentrate really hard on them and get good grades in them rather than take lots of easy courses and try to get good grades in all of them.

At the end of the day, how much time do you think you will have left to do all the homework for the heavier classes? How much time do you need to digest everything you've learned that day?

Did you get a 5 on the BC test? If you could have passed out of the 1 series, you probably should have gone into 53. (There's a thread about that somewhere here) I've heard plenty of things about people who got 5s on the BC test and who came out pretty disappointed with their grades in 1A/1B. I'm actually going to be a freshman too, so I don't know what exactly makes the 1 series so difficult from personal experience. One of my friends who's a year ahead of me was in calc BC, and she thought 1A was really easy. Then she got her ass kicked in 1B. I trust that the profs must have some way of making things harder than they have to be XD

Even if some classes are easier than others, the units represent an issue of time commitment. It really depends on how much risk you want to take.

thanks commensense. yes i know that pffp isn't problem solving and stuff lol. i think it may be interesting.

you have chem lab on a monday?

ok, i just hope you don't have midterms on mondays also like us last semester lol

Looks like an ok schedule actually. If you've already taken Calc, math 1a will be cake. The only thing you will have to worry about is when you have 3-4-5 midterms in one week.

It's hard but doable. This is very simple actually. Try it out for a few weeks and if you think it's too much, drop one. Also keep in mind that the first 5 weeks are very easy so if you think you can barely handle it, drop one.

The schedule looks pretty chill. If you're MCB then math 1A is fine. I think you should only jump straight into 53 if you're an engineer. People say the 1 series is harder because the curves are tougher (fewer % get As), but you have to remember that in 1A, you're competing with MCB, engineers, and a bunch of random majors, whereas in 53/54, you're competing with pretty much all engineers, so the competition is tougher. 1 series should be fine if you got a 5 in BC. Chem is just reading and a lot of MCBs do well. Be ready for a lot of reading in comp lit, but you'll be fine just reading sparknotes summaries.

The only thing I would change is your 8am classes. I thought I could handle 8ams because I had to wake up at 6am for high school, so I signed up for physics 7b my first semester at 8am. I ended up going to the first 2 weeks and never showed up again. Way too early.

hmm If I were you, I would drop psych.....since its your first semester and all that... but if you think you can handle it:]....
you can always drop later so just see what happens.

It doesn't look like it should be too bad. Pffp should be easy, and math 1a should also be a breeze for you. Psych should also not be very hard. Comp lit and chem will be your challenging classes. How you handle them depends on what kind of person you are.

You should be fine. Just be sure to stay on top of things. Don't be afraid to drop a course before the deadline if it's too tough, but honestly, once you start with the courses, you will find that it really isn't that hard. You might have a few killer midterm weeks though.
